Gotham Knights has a large sandbox for players to explore, and depending on which hero you choose, all Batman’s protectors have a unique way to roam the city. The Red Hood harnesses mystical powers to create spiritual platforms from which he can jump, Batgirl has a more traditional sleigh mechanic, and Nightwing takes to the skies with a device that fans jokingly refer to as a Fortnite glider.
In a Discord A&A session, Creative Director Patrick Redding explained the inspiration behind the Gotham Knights nicknamed “The Flying Trapeze” glider. The developer Warner Bros. Montreal drew inspiration from some of the classic versions of the Nightwing comic book series where he used several jet-powered gliders that replicated his circus upbringing.
“We loved the death-defying angle of looking at all the different stealth drones in Batman’s arsenal and calculating that he could get away with hanging one of the smaller models and still be able to keep or soar on it,” he explained. “He’s designed to feel a bit improvisational, and he draws on his intensely athletic style, which fits in with Nightwing’s approach to everything. Flying has a different feel than head-slipping in Batgirl, and it blends in well with his big moves in parkour and jumping, like as well as with wrestling.”
All four characters have a different cadence to their gameplay when it comes to verticals, with game director Jeff Elinor adding that Warner Bros. Montreal wanted each character to feel unique in their design. Batgirl’s gliding plays with the wind to create a certain sense of speed, Red Hood’s jump is designed to feel like a fast-paced platform, and Robin’s teleport has a quick feel to it.
“The Nightwing glider looks different because it’s a machine, and you can direct it to climb over and around tall buildings, as well as glide,” Elinor explained. “They’re all really different in feel, and until you play them a little bit, it’s hard to appreciate how much it has changed the way you get around Gotham.”
When it comes to combat, each character also caters to specific styles and roles. Robin is the best heroine that focuses on stealth, Batgirl can hack the environment to give her an edge and has powers focused on health, Nightwing combines combat action skills with co-op support abilities. Red Hood is the tank of the group and deals long range damage while also being adept at breaking up groups of enemies. You won’t have to stick to these roles, though, so depending on the equipped equipment and the skills you invest in them, each character can specialize in other areas.
