The latest episode of Apex Legends Stories from the Outlands series, “Family Business,” premiered via the game’s official YouTube channel today. Focusing on Lifeline, the episode depicts a rebellious young Ajay’s escape from her parents’ high-maintenance and heavily armed lifestyle, along with the friends she made – and lost – along the way.
The episode begins with the revelation that Lifeline has a boyfriend. After a heated argument with her mother, Ajay leaves her wealthy family for good. Apparently she took one of the drones made by Chevrex, her parents’ company, and modified it to heal rather than hurt. With DOC, Ajay leaves her old life and joins Frontier Corps, a humanitarian aid organization.
After rescuing her friend on the battlefield, Ajay notices that some of the weapons used in the battle are also made by Chevrex, cementing her decision to cut off her family for good. Unfortunately, her boyfriend is seriously injured and still needs more medication. The drug in question is produced by Silva Pharmaceuticals, a company run by Torres Silva, Octane’s grandfather (who spent most of Octane’s life disguised as his father instead). Always on an adventure, a young Octane teams up with Lifeline to raid his family’s pharmaceutical facility, although Octane appears to have ulterior motives, as he is carrying a handful of Stim syringes when the duo is arrested by Silva Pharmaceuticals’ security team. Some quick thinking on Lifeline allows her to quickly dispatch the security team, even though a swarm of Chevrex drones are chasing Ajay and Octavio as they leave the facility. Fortunately, Octane had a great idea bringing along a pair of winged suits, allowing the pair to escape to safety—but not before Octane took a shot in the thigh.
Back at Frontier Corps Hospital, Ajayi and Octane returned with the drug, but were stopped when Torres Silva and Lifeline’s mother, Chériz, arrived with armed guards and another fleet of Chevrex drones. However, Octane and Lifeline seem to have planned this, as Octane begins a live broadcast of the incident as Torres and Chercy begin pointing weapons at Frontier Corps patients. Fearing a PR catastrophe, Torres and Chercy quickly retreated, and the patients applauded for Ajay and Octavio.
Unfortunately, Lifeline’s friend is not among them. “You will always be Che,” he stated before ending their relationship. But thankfully, Octane still has Lifeline’s back. As he cracks jokes to calm her down, viewers finally get a closer look at his maskless face. He also has organic legs, which means that these events occurred prior to the infamous bomb-jumping incident that left Octane with metal legs.
The episode ends with Ajay’s song Lifeline and Octane, The Flyer Liars. It’s a bittersweet moment, given the current state of their relationship after their massive season 12 controversy, but today’s episode of Stories from Outlands seems to suggest there may still be hope in their friendship. But they sure have a lot to decipher – shortly after Octane blew his legs, he manipulated Ajay into getting his robotic legs, putting her career in jeopardy. Last season, he inadvertently handed Lifeline’s beloved Frontier Corps to her mother on a silver platter, and accidentally aided his hostile grandfather’s takeover of the guild, so it makes sense that Ajay doesn’t want to do anything with him at the moment. But their relationship isn’t likely to end forever – because they’ll essentially need to work as a team now that Torres Silva has control of the guild and Cherisse Che has taken over Lifeline’s Frontier Corps.
